Vasque Sunsetter NTX Hiking Boots
We built the Sunsetter NTX for hikers who prefer covering ground quickly without sacrificing protection. This lightweight trail boot combines Nature-Tex waterproof technology—a sustainable membrane made from recycled and bio-based materials—with a responsive midsole and aggressive tread pattern designed for variable terrain. The upper uses recycled mesh and synthetic overlays to shed weight while maintaining structure around the ankle, giving you the freedom to move fast on technical ascents and descents.
Whether you’re logging miles on a weekend loop or training for a longer backcountry route, the Sunsetter NTX keeps your feet dry, supported, and ready for the next section of trail. We designed this boot for speed-minded hikers who still need real waterproof performance when conditions turn wet.

Nature-Tex waterproof technology & sustainable materials

The Sunsetter NTX uses Nature-Tex, our waterproof-breathable membrane built from at least 25% recycled materials and bio-based components instead of petroleum-based films. This membrane keeps rain, puddles, and creek crossings on the outside while allowing sweat vapor to escape, so your feet stay dry from both directions. The upper combines recycled mesh with synthetic overlays that wrap the midfoot and heel for support where you need it most.
We chose these materials to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance—Nature-Tex delivers the same waterproof reliability you’d expect from traditional membranes, but with a lower carbon footprint. The recycled mesh shaves weight while maintaining breathability, which matters when you’re moving quickly and generating heat on steep climbs.
Midsole cushioning & traction for fast-moving trails

Speed hiking demands responsive cushioning that doesn’t bog you down. The Sunsetter NTX uses a full-length EVA midsole that balances shock absorption with ground feel, so you can read the trail beneath your feet and adjust your footing quickly on technical sections. We kept the stack height moderate to maintain stability while still protecting your feet from rocks and roots.
Vasque Traverse Outsole
Our Traverse outsole features 4mm directional lugs arranged in a pattern that grips on ascents, brakes confidently on descents, and sheds mud efficiently in between. The rubber compound remains sticky across a wide temperature range, which means reliable traction whether you’re hiking in morning frost or afternoon heat. We tested this sole on loose scree, wet granite, and muddy forest trails to ensure it performs across the conditions speed hikers encounter most.
Fit, sizing & break-in period

We designed the Sunsetter NTX with a medium width last that accommodates most foot shapes comfortably. The toe box offers enough room to splay naturally on descents without excess space that would allow your foot to slide forward. Order your normal hiking boot size—most customers find true-to-size fit works well, though if you’re between sizes or prefer thicker socks, sizing up a half size gives extra room.
The break-in period is minimal compared to traditional leather boots. Most hikers report the Sunsetter NTX feels comfortable out of the box, with full break-in occurring within 15-20 miles. The recycled mesh upper flexes naturally without the stiffness of full-grain leather, and the padded collar conforms to your ankle shape quickly. We still recommend wearing them around town for a few days before committing to a long trail day.

What people are saying

Common questions about the Sunsetter NTX
Yes, the Sunsetter NTX features a Nature-Tex waterproof membrane that keeps water out while allowing moisture vapor to escape. This membrane is made from recycled and bio-based materials and delivers the same waterproof reliability as traditional petroleum-based membranes. The boots will keep your feet dry through creek crossings, rain, and wet trail conditions.
Each boot weighs 1 pound 13 ounces in a men’s size 9. The total pair weight is approximately 3 pounds 10 ounces. This makes the Sunsetter NTX lighter than traditional leather hiking boots while still providing the support and protection needed for technical trails.
We designed the Sunsetter NTX for speed hikers tackling variable terrain including rocky trails, forest paths, loose scree, and moderate scrambles. The Vasque Traverse outsole with 4mm directional lugs provides reliable traction on ascents, descents, and mixed surfaces. These boots work well for day hikes, training miles, and fast-paced weekend trips where you’re covering significant distance.
The Nature-Tex membrane maintains its waterproof performance without additional treatment for most of the boot’s lifespan. After heavy use, you may apply a DWR spray designed for synthetic hiking boots to restore the outer fabric’s water-shedding ability—this prevents the surface from wetting out, which helps the membrane breathe more effectively. Reapply DWR every 40-60 trail miles depending on conditions.
The Sunsetter NTX uses our medium-width last, which fits similarly to other Vasque trail boots like the Breeze LT NTX and Talus models. Most customers find true-to-size fit works well. If you have wider feet or prefer thicker socks, consider ordering a half size up. The toe box offers natural splay room without excess space that would cause your foot to slide forward on descents.
Yes, the Sunsetter NTX ships with removable EVA insoles that can be replaced with custom orthotics or aftermarket insoles. Removing the factory insoles creates enough volume to accommodate most orthotic designs without compromising fit or comfort. Many hikers replace the stock insoles with options offering more arch support or specialized cushioning for long-distance days.
Nature-Tex is a waterproof-breathable membrane made from at least 25 percent recycled materials and bio-based components instead of petroleum-based films. It delivers the same core performance as traditional waterproof membranes—keeping water out while allowing sweat vapor to escape—but with a lower environmental footprint. In field testing, Nature-Tex performs comparably to GORE-TEX in terms of waterproof reliability and breathability across a wide range of temperatures and activity levels.
