Every vasque vibram hiking boot in our GORE-TEX collection uses a bonded waterproof membrane that sits between the boot’s outer shell and interior lining. This three-layer laminate blocks liquid water from entering the boot while allowing water vapor from perspiration to escape, maintaining a dry environment inside the boot during rain, snow, and stream crossings.
The GORE-TEX Extended Comfort variant used in the St. Elias provides higher breathability for warmer conditions and aerobic activity, while the standard GORE-TEX membrane in the Breeze AT prioritizes maximum waterproof protection for wet-season backpacking. We spec three distinct Vibram rubber compounds across our vasque vibram hiking boots, each optimized for different trail conditions. The Vibram Contact Grip on the St. Elias uses a firmer durometer rubber that resists abrasion on rocky terrain while maintaining grip on dry granite and packed dirt. The Vibram Megagrip compound found on the Breeze AT offers superior wet-surface traction, using a softer rubber formulation that conforms to micro-texture on wet rocks and roots. Sizing, Fit & Break-In Period

Vasque vibram hiking boots run true to US sizing, but we recommend ordering a half size up if you plan to wear midweight hiking socks or if you have wider feet. The St. Elias and Talus AT are built on our traditional last with a medium-width toe box, while the Breeze AT uses a slightly narrower last that works better for low-volume feet.
The leather boots require a 15-25 mile break-in period before they conform to your foot shape. During the first few hikes, focus on shorter routes with moderate elevation change to allow the leather to flex at natural crease points. The nylon mesh models require minimal break-in, typically feeling comfortable after 5-10 miles. If you experience heel slippage during initial wear, tighten the laces using the heel-lock technique and allow the EVA midsole to compress slightly over the first week.

The GORE-TEX membrane itself maintains waterproof integrity for the life of the boot when properly cared for—typically 500 to 1,000 miles depending on terrain and maintenance. The outer waterproof treatment on the leather and textile uppers wears off faster, usually requiring reapplication every 30-50 miles of use.
