GORE-TEX waterproof protection & breathability

The Vasque Torre AT GTX hiking boots feature a full GORE-TEX membrane that creates a waterproof barrier without sacrificing breathability. Water molecules can’t penetrate the membrane, but perspiration vapor escapes freely, keeping your feet dry from both external moisture and internal heat buildup.
We’ve sealed every seam and reinforced high-wear zones where water typically finds its way in—around the toe box, heel counter, and gusset. The membrane extends up past the ankle collar, so stream crossings and unexpected rainstorms won’t compromise your comfort. On multi-day treks where you’re covering 15+ miles daily, that breathability becomes critical; wet feet lead to blisters, and blisters end adventures.
Vibram MegaGrip outsole for technical terrain

We spec’d the Vibram MegaGrip compound specifically for its performance on wet surfaces. This isn’t a basic hiking tread—MegaGrip delivers exceptional grip on slick granite, wet logs, and muddy descents where standard rubber compounds slip.
The Torre AT’s outsole features 5mm lugs arranged in a directional pattern that bites on ascents and brakes on steep downhills. We carved siping channels into each lug to enhance surface contact and channel water away from the contact patch. The heel brake zone uses wider, more aggressive lugs to control your speed on loose scree and trail gravel. Stability chassis & ankle support system

TPU midfoot wrap for lateral control
A molded thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) shank wraps the midfoot and extends through the arch, creating a stability platform that prevents the boot from rolling on off-camber slopes. This chassis transfers energy efficiently during push-off while protecting your foot from sharp rocks underfoot.
The Torre AT GTX uses a mid-height collar that rises 5.5 inches above the footbed—high enough to support your ankle on uneven ground without restricting natural range of motion. We padded the collar with memory foam that conforms to your ankle’s unique shape, eliminating pressure points during long descents. Internal heel counters lock your foot in place, preventing the slippage that causes blisters and bruised toenails on steep downhills.

Common questions about the Torre AT GTX
The Torre AT GTX works well for three-season hiking and shoulder-season snow, but we don’t recommend it for deep winter mountaineering. The GORE-TEX membrane provides waterproof protection against slush and light snow, and the Vibram MegaGrip outsole handles packed snow and icy patches better than standard hiking treads.
However, the boot lacks insulation, so your feet will get cold during extended exposure to sub-freezing temperatures. For serious winter hiking or snowshoeing, consider pairing the Torre AT with insulated socks or upgrading to our Skywalk GTX, which features a Thinsulate liner rated for alpine conditions.
The Torre AT uses the same last (foot mold) as our Talus and Breeze series, so if you own other Vasque boots, order your standard size. The fit is true to length with a medium width profile—slightly roomier than narrow European brands but more snug than wide American work boots.
The heel pocket is deliberately narrow to prevent lift, while the forefoot offers enough volume for toe splay on descents. If you’re between sizes or have high-volume feet, we recommend going up a half size and using the lacing system to dial in a precise fit.
Yes, the Vasque Torre AT GTX is built with a stitched-and-cemented construction that allows for professional resoling. Most cobblers who specialize in outdoor footwear can replace the Vibram MegaGrip outsole once the lugs wear down to 2-3mm depth.
Resoling typically costs $80-120 depending on your region, and the process takes 2-3 weeks. We recommend resoling before the midsole foam becomes visible—once water penetrates the midsole, the boot’s structural integrity degrades. A well-maintained Torre AT can handle two resoles before the upper leather or GORE-TEX membrane requires replacement.
The Torre AT GTX and Talus AT target slightly different hiking styles. The Torre uses a full-grain leather upper for maximum durability and abrasion resistance, making it ideal for rugged alpine terrain, off-trail scrambling, and multi-day backpacking.
The Talus AT employs a mix of synthetic materials and split-grain leather, which reduces weight and speeds break-in time—better for day hikers and fastpackers who prioritize agility over heavy-duty protection. Both boots share the same Vibram MegaGrip outsole and waterproof membrane technology, but the Torre’s construction can handle rougher conditions and heavier loads.
After muddy hikes, rinse the exterior of your Torre AT GTX boots with lukewarm water and a soft brush—avoid harsh detergents or solvents that can compromise the GORE-TEX membrane’s DWR (durable water repellent) coating. Let the boots air-dry away from direct heat sources.
Every few months, restore the DWR coating by applying a spray-on or wash-in treatment designed for GORE-TEX footwear. This treatment causes water to bead up on the surface rather than soaking into the fabric, which helps the membrane breathe efficiently. Never use fabric softener, bleach, or dry-cleaning chemicals—these products permanently damage the microscopic pores that make GORE-TEX waterproof yet breathable.
We recommend midweight merino wool hiking socks with light cushioning in the heel and forefoot. Merino regulates temperature better than synthetic blends, wicks moisture away from your skin, and resists odor buildup during multi-day trips.
Avoid cotton socks entirely—cotton retains moisture and causes blisters when worn inside waterproof boots. For cold-weather hiking, layer a thin merino liner sock under your primary hiking sock to create an insulating air pocket and reduce friction. If you experience hot spots during break-in, apply moleskin or Leukotape to vulnerable areas before they develop into full blisters.
Yes, the Torre AT GTX is compatible with strap-on microspikes and lightweight traction cleats like Kahtoola MICROspikes or Yaktrax. The molded TPU chassis and reinforced heel counter provide a stable platform for these devices, and the Vibram outsole’s lug pattern allows the spikes to grip effectively.
However, the Torre AT is not rated for full step-in crampons used in technical mountaineering. If you plan to tackle steep ice or glaciated terrain requiring rigid crampons, upgrade to a boot with a semi-rigid or rigid shank and welted construction, such as our Skywalk GTX or a dedicated alpine boot.
