GORE-TEX waterproof construction
Every Contender boot ships with a bonded GORE-TEX membrane that blocks water while allowing moisture vapor to pass through. We seal the bootie edge to the upper before stitching, so there’s no path for water to sneak in at the seams. The membrane extends all the way to the ankle collar, meaning you can step through shallow streams without soaking your socks.
GORE-TEX doesn’t just keep rain out — it manages the humidity your feet generate during steep climbs. On a hot ascent, sweat vapor escapes through the membrane instead of pooling inside the boot. That breathability makes a real difference when you’re carrying a full pack in summer.
Vibram MegaGrip outsole & tread pattern
We spec’d the Vibram MegaGrip compound for its wet-rock performance. The rubber stays pliable in cold conditions and grips slick granite better than standard hiking compounds. Our engineers worked with Vibram to design a lug pattern that sheds mud while biting into loose dirt — you’ll notice the difference on descents.
Tread depth & durability
The lugs measure 5mm deep, aggressive enough for off-trail scrambles but not so tall they feel unstable on flat trail. We’ve seen these outsoles go 500+ miles before the tread wears noticeably. The same Vibram partnership that defines our waterproof boot lineup carries through to every hiking model we build, because traction and protection matter equally when conditions turn.
Nubuck leather upper & reinforcements
The 2.0mm nubuck leather we use on the Contender resists scuffs from trailside brush and granite scrambles. Nubuck takes longer to break in than synthetic mesh, but it holds its shape for years instead of sagging after one season. We reinforce high-wear zones — toe cap, heel counter, and lace eyelets — with additional layers.
The mid-height collar supports your ankle on uneven ground without limiting forward flex. We cut flex zones into the leather at the ball of the foot and ankle hinge, so the boot bends naturally as you walk. Expect about 10-15 miles of break-in before the leather fully conforms to your foot shape.

Questions about the Contender GORE-TEX boots
The GORE-TEX membrane extends to the ankle collar, so the boots stay waterproof in stream crossings up to about 6 inches deep. If water tops the collar, it will run down inside. For deeper crossings, we recommend gaiters or accepting wet feet and packing dry socks.
The membrane itself won’t degrade from repeated soakings — GORE-TEX is designed for long-term wet exposure. Just let the boots air-dry fully between trips to prevent interior mildew.
Yes, expect 10-15 miles of walking before the nubuck leather fully softens. We recommend wearing them around town or on short hikes before a long backpacking trip. The leather will crease at your natural flex points and conform to your foot shape.
Some hikers speed up break-in by wearing the boots at home with thick socks for a few hours each evening. Once broken in, the leather holds that custom fit for years.
GORE-TEX is a licensed third-party membrane we bond into certain models like the Contender. UltraDry is our in-house waterproofing system. Both block liquid water while allowing vapor to escape, but GORE-TEX generally offers slightly better breathability in high-output activities.
We use GORE-TEX on boots intended for wet climates and multi-day trips where reliable waterproofing is critical. UltraDry appears on lighter-duty trail shoes and budget-friendly models.
The Contender handles packed snow and light snowshoeing well. The Vibram MegaGrip rubber stays flexible in cold temps, and the waterproof membrane keeps slush out. However, the boot isn’t insulated, so your feet may get cold on long winter outings below 20°F.
For deep snow or true winter mountaineering, consider our Skywalk model, which includes 400g insulation and a taller shaft to pair with gaiters.
We see most Contender outsoles reach 500-700 miles before the lugs wear down noticeably. Actual lifespan depends on terrain — abrasive granite shortens life, while soft forest trails extend it. When the lugs wear below 3mm depth, traction on wet surfaces declines.
Vibram outsoles can be replaced by a skilled cobbler if the upper leather is still in good shape. Resoling costs about half the price of new boots and extends the life another few hundred miles.
Yes, the TPU shank and firm midsole provide enough stability for moderate scrambles and boulder fields. The nubuck leather resists abrasion when you’re brushing against rock. The Vibram sole grips dry granite well, though it’s not as sticky as dedicated approach-shoe rubber.
If you’re doing technical fifth-class scrambles regularly, a low-cut approach shoe offers better precision. The Contender excels at off-trail hiking where you encounter occasional rock but still need ankle support and waterproofing for mixed terrain.
Each pair ships with removable EVA footbeds, round nylon laces, and a product-care card with leather-conditioning instructions. We don’t include waterproofing spray or conditioner — you’ll need to purchase those separately.
The box also contains warranty information. We cover manufacturing defects for one year from purchase. Normal wear like outsole erosion and upper scuffs isn’t covered, but seam failures or membrane delamination are.
