Vasque Vibram GORE-TEX Hiking Boots | Trail-Tested Waterproof Performance

★★★★★4.8/5· thousands of reviews

Our St. Elias represents over four decades of backcountry boot engineering, combining full-grain leather construction with proven GORE-TEX waterproofing and a Vibram Contact Grip outsole. Designed for multi-day backpacking trips and technical terrain, this boot delivers ankle support and underfoot stability when you’re carrying heavy loads on unpredictable trails.

The 2.2mm full-grain leather upper breaks in faster than traditional mountaineering boots while maintaining the structure needed for uneven rock fields and muddy descents. We’ve paired the GORE-TEX membrane with our proprietary two-density EVA midsole, giving you cushioning on long approaches without sacrificing the responsive feel that helps you read the trail beneath your feet.

GORE-TEX Membrane Technology & Waterproof Construction

GORE-TEX Membrane Technology & Waterproof Construction

Every vasque vibram hiking boot in our GORE-TEX collection uses a bonded waterproof membrane that sits between the boot’s outer shell and interior lining. This three-layer laminate blocks liquid water from entering the boot while allowing water vapor from perspiration to escape, maintaining a dry environment inside the boot during rain, snow, and stream crossings.

The GORE-TEX Extended Comfort variant used in the St. Elias provides higher breathability for warmer conditions and aerobic activity, while the standard GORE-TEX membrane in the Breeze AT prioritizes maximum waterproof protection for wet-season backpacking. We seal every seam with waterproof tape and treat the leather with a hydrophobic finish, creating multiple barriers against moisture intrusion.

Vibram Outsole Options & Traction Systems

Vibram Outsole Options & Traction Systems

We spec three distinct Vibram rubber compounds across our vasque vibram hiking boots, each optimized for different trail conditions. The Vibram Contact Grip on the St. Elias uses a firmer durometer rubber that resists abrasion on rocky terrain while maintaining grip on dry granite and packed dirt. The 5mm directional lugs shed mud effectively and provide reliable braking on steep descents.

The Vibram Megagrip compound found on the Breeze AT offers superior wet-surface traction, using a softer rubber formulation that conforms to micro-texture on wet rocks and roots. This compound wears faster than Contact Grip on abrasive surfaces but delivers measurably better performance when trails are wet or icy. The Nuasi outsole on the Talus AT splits the difference with a dual-compound design—softer rubber on the forefoot and toe for climbing traction, harder rubber at the heel for durability.

Sizing, Fit & Break-In Period

Sizing, Fit & Break-In Period

Vasque vibram hiking boots run true to US sizing, but we recommend ordering a half size up if you plan to wear midweight hiking socks or if you have wider feet. The St. Elias and Talus AT are built on our traditional last with a medium-width toe box, while the Breeze AT uses a slightly narrower last that works better for low-volume feet.

The leather boots require a 15-25 mile break-in period before they conform to your foot shape. During the first few hikes, focus on shorter routes with moderate elevation change to allow the leather to flex at natural crease points. The nylon mesh models require minimal break-in, typically feeling comfortable after 5-10 miles. If you experience heel slippage during initial wear, tighten the laces using the heel-lock technique and allow the EVA midsole to compress slightly over the first week.

Best boot I’ve owned for Pacific Northwest trails
I’ve put 400 miles on my St. Elias boots over two seasons of hiking in Washington. The GORE-TEX keeps my feet completely dry even when crossing streams, and the Vibram sole grips wet roots better than my previous boots. The leather took about three weeks to break in, but now they feel custom-molded to my feet.

Lighter than expected with excellent ankle support
I was skeptical about the Breeze AT’s ability to handle a 30-pound pack, but these boots performed flawlessly on a five-day Wind River trip. My ankles never felt fatigued, and the boots dried out overnight even after hiking through morning dew. The fit is true to size with thick socks.

Great value for the waterproofing quality
The Talus AT has been my go-to boot for Colorado day hikes all summer. The UltraDry membrane works as advertised—I’ve hiked through multiple afternoon thunderstorms with zero water intrusion. My only minor complaint is that the insole could have a bit more arch support for my high-arched feet, but I swapped in custom orthotics and now they’re perfect.

Finally found a boot that doesn’t cause blisters
I have notoriously difficult feet and have returned countless hiking boots over the years. The St. Elias fit perfectly right out of the box with minimal break-in. The heel cup locks my foot in place, and I haven’t had a single blister in over 200 miles. The quality of the leather is outstanding.

Exceptional traction on technical terrain
I primarily use my Breeze AT boots for scrambling routes in the Adirondacks. The Vibram Megagrip rubber sticks to wet granite like nothing else I’ve tried, and the boots are light enough that I don’t feel clumsy on exposed sections. The waterproofing has held up perfectly after a year of hard use.

Comfortable for all-day wear with a heavy pack
We just finished the Appalachian Trail over six months, and my Talus AT boots lasted for nearly 1,800 miles before the tread finally wore down. The midsole cushioning held up remarkably well, and my feet never felt beat up at the end of long 20-mile days. I’ll absolutely buy another pair for my next thru-hike.

Common Questions About Vasque Vibram GORE-TEX Boots

The St. Elias works best for backpacking trips with loads over 40 pounds and hikers who prioritize maximum ankle support and durability. Choose the Breeze AT if you primarily day-hike or fastpack with lighter loads and want better breathability and reduced weight. The Talus AT sits in the middle—it handles weekend trips with moderate pack weight while still feeling comfortable on day hikes without a pack.

Your typical terrain also matters. The St. Elias excels on rocky, uneven trails where you need a stiffer sole and more protection. The Breeze AT performs better on maintained trails where you want to move quickly, and the lighter weight reduces fatigue over long distances.

The GORE-TEX membrane allows water vapor from foot perspiration to escape, but no waterproof boot breathes as well as a non-waterproof shoe. The Breeze AT incorporates mesh panels in the upper that improve ventilation beyond what the membrane alone provides, making it our most breathable waterproof option for warm-weather hiking.

For summer temperatures above 85°F on dry trails, you may find a non-waterproof boot more comfortable. However, if your routes include stream crossings or you hike in areas with unpredictable afternoon storms, the waterproof protection typically outweighs the slight reduction in breathability.

The GORE-TEX membrane itself maintains waterproof integrity for the life of the boot when properly cared for—typically 500 to 1,000 miles depending on terrain and maintenance. The outer waterproof treatment on the leather and textile uppers wears off faster, usually requiring reapplication every 30-50 miles of use.

If water starts soaking into the boot’s exterior fabric, the GORE-TEX membrane underneath is still waterproof, but the wet outer layer reduces breathability and adds weight. Regular cleaning and retreatment with a PFC-free waterproofing product keeps the entire system working optimally.

The St. Elias and Talus AT handle winter conditions down to approximately 20°F when paired with midweight merino wool socks, though they lack insulation for extended stationary periods in cold weather. The GORE-TEX membrane blocks snow melt and slush from entering the boot, and the Vibram outsoles maintain traction on packed snow and ice.

For winter camping or hiking below 20°F, consider our Snowburban UltraDry boot with 200g Thinsulate insulation. All three standard hiking boots accept strap-on traction devices like Microspikes for icy trail sections.

GORE-TEX uses a microporous membrane laminated to the boot’s lining fabric, with pores small enough to block liquid water but large enough to allow water vapor molecules to pass through. UltraDry applies a hydrophobic treatment to both the membrane and the boot’s interior textiles, actively pushing moisture away from your foot rather than just allowing it to escape.

In our testing, GORE-TEX provides slightly better waterproof protection during submersion and heavy rain, while UltraDry often feels more comfortable during high-output activity because it moves moisture away from the skin faster. Both systems perform well for typical hiking conditions.

Hiking boots should fit snugly in the heel and midfoot with enough room in the toe box to wiggle your toes. When standing on a downhill slope with the boots unlaced, your toes should just barely touch the front of the boot—this ensures adequate space for toe splay and prevents black toenails on descents.

Most hikers size up a half size from their running shoe size to accommodate thicker hiking socks and foot swelling during long days. Try boots on in the afternoon when your feet are slightly swollen, and walk on an incline to test for heel slippage and toe contact.

We offer wide-width versions of the St. Elias and Talus AT that add 6mm to the forefoot width. The standard-width boots already accommodate most foot shapes, but hikers with bunions or Morton’s toe often prefer the wide option for additional toe box room.

All three boots ship with removable EVA footbeds that you can replace with custom orthotics or aftermarket insoles for high arches. The boot’s interior volume accommodates insoles up to 5mm thick without creating pressure points at the collar or tongue.
