Full-Grain Leather Upper & Waterproof Construction
We source 2.4-2.6mm full-grain leather for the Skywalk upper because thinner splits and suedes simply don’t hold up under sustained backcountry use. This thickness provides natural abrasion resistance against rock faces and trail debris while accepting boot wax and conditioners that extend the leather’s lifespan.
The integrated GORE-TEX bootie sits between the leather shell and the interior lining, creating a waterproof barrier that lets moisture vapor escape while blocking rain, snowmelt, and stream crossings. Unlike coated waterproofing that degrades over time, the GORE-TEX membrane maintains its performance through years of wet-weather use. Our waterproof membrane technology has protected hikers across alpine and desert environments since we first adopted it in the early 1980s.
Vibram Bifida Outsole & Traction System

Three-Quarter Steel Shank
We installed a three-quarter steel shank in the Skywalk’s midsole architecture to resist torsional flex under heavy pack loads. When you’re carrying forty to sixty pounds, a fully flexible boot sole allows your foot to bend unnaturally around rocks and roots, fatiguing the plantar fascia and inviting tendon strain.
The shank extends from the heel through the arch, stopping short of the forefoot to preserve natural toe flex during push-off. This creates a stable platform for your midfoot while still allowing you to feel the trail and adjust your gait on uneven ground. The steel material adds minimal weight compared to nylon or composite alternatives but provides superior rigidity that doesn’t soften in summer heat.

Most hikers report a break-in period of twenty to thirty miles before the full-grain leather fully conforms to their foot shape. We recommend wearing the boots around the house with your hiking socks for several days, then taking them on progressively longer day hikes before committing to a multi-day trip.
