Vasque Women’s St. Elias Hiking Boots
We built the St. Elias for women who take their hiking seriously. Full-grain leather uppers wrap your foot in durable, protective support that stands up to scree fields and rocky alpine passes. A GORE-TEX waterproof-breathable membrane seals out rain and creek crossings while letting moisture vapor escape so your feet stay dry from both directions.
The foundation is a Vibram Contact Grip outsole with deep lugs for traction on loose dirt, wet granite, and trail mud. Inside, a dual-density EVA midsole cushions long days under a heavy pack without bottoming out. We added a TPU shank for torsional stability on uneven terrain — your ankle stays supported when you’re edging across a talus slope or stepping down off a boulder. The ankle collar is padded without bulk, and the lacing system locks your heel down for confident descents.

Materials & Construction — Built to Last Miles

The upper is 2.0–2.2mm full-grain leather tanned for water resistance and durability. We source hides that balance flexibility with abrasion resistance — thick enough to shrug off brush and sharp rock, supple enough to break in without blistering. Synthetic overlays reinforce high-wear zones at the toe and heel counter.
Inside, the GORE-TEX membrane is bonded to a textile bootie that seals the entire foot chamber. This isn’t a coating that wears off — the waterproofing is a laminated layer that lasts the life of the boot. The Vibram Contact Grip compound stays tacky in cold temps and resists chunking on sharp edges. If you wear through the sole after years of trail miles, the stitched-welt construction means a cobbler can resole the boot rather than throwing it away.
Sizing & Fit — What to Expect Out of the Box

The St. Elias runs true to US women’s sizing with a medium (D-width) footbed volume. If you’re between sizes or plan to wear heavyweight hiking socks, we recommend going up a half size. The toe box is generous enough for your toes to splay on descents without cramping, but not so roomy that your foot slides forward.
Break-in takes about 15–20 miles of varied terrain. Expect some stiffness in the ankle cuff for the first few hikes — this is the leather and footbed molding to your stride. Wear them around the house with your hiking socks for an hour or two before hitting the trail. The lacing system has seven eyelets and two sets of speed hooks, so you can snug the midfoot independently from the ankle to dial in heel lock and forefoot comfort.
Performance on Trail — Where the St. Elias Excels

We designed this boot for multi-day backpacking trips where you’re carrying 30–50 pounds and covering 8–12 miles a day on rocky, uneven terrain. The midsole cushioning strikes a balance — soft enough to absorb shock on long descents, firm enough that you feel stable when stepping onto a wobbly rock with a full pack.
The ankle support is stiffer than a lightweight hiker but more flexible than a mountaineering boot. You get lateral stability for off-camber trails and scree slopes without the stiff-legged gait of a full backpacking boot. Traction is confidence-inspiring on wet granite and loose gravel — the lug pattern channels mud and the rubber compound grips in both dry and damp conditions. If you’re stepping up from a lighter boot with fabric panels to something that handles rougher terrain and heavier loads, the St. Elias is the bridge between day-hike footwear and expedition-grade boots.

Common Questions About the St. Elias Boots
Yes. The St. Elias features a GORE-TEX waterproof-breathable membrane bonded to the interior lining. This sealed bootie construction keeps water out while allowing sweat vapor to escape. The waterproofing is a permanent laminated layer, not a spray-on coating that wears off over time. The boots will keep your feet dry through creek crossings, rain, and wet trail conditions.
Expect a break-in period of 15 to 20 miles of varied terrain. The full-grain leather upper and structured ankle cuff need time to conform to your foot shape and flex patterns. We recommend wearing the boots around the house with your hiking socks for a few hours before taking them on a long trail. The stiffness in the ankle will soften as the leather creases and molds to your stride. After the initial break-in, the boots become noticeably more comfortable and supportive.
The St. Elias is built for rugged backcountry hiking and multi-day backpacking trips on rocky, uneven terrain. They excel on trails with loose scree, talus fields, wet granite slabs, and off-camber slopes. The ankle support and midsole stability make them ideal for carrying 30 to 50 pound packs over 8 to 12 miles per day. They’re stiffer and more protective than lightweight day-hiking boots but more flexible than mountaineering boots.
Yes. The St. Elias uses stitched-welt construction, which means the upper is sewn to the midsole rather than glued. When the Vibram outsole wears down after several hundred miles, a qualified boot repair shop can remove the old sole and attach a new one. This extends the lifespan of the boot significantly and is more economical than replacing the entire boot once the tread wears out.
The St. Elias runs true to US women’s sizing with a medium (D-width) volume. If you’re between sizes or plan to wear thick hiking socks, we recommend ordering a half size up. The toe box is roomy enough to prevent cramping on descents, but the heel cup and midfoot are snug to prevent slippage. Try them on with the socks you’ll actually hike in to get an accurate fit.
After each hike, brush off dried mud and wipe the leather with a damp cloth. Let the boots air-dry at room temperature, never near direct heat. Every 20 to 30 miles, clean the uppers with saddle soap or a leather boot cleaner, then apply a leather conditioner or wax to restore oils and maintain water resistance. Focus on the flex points and seams where the leather creases most. Proper care keeps the leather supple and extends the waterproofing lifespan.
Each boot weighs approximately 1 pound 14 ounces in a women’s size 7. The total pair weight is around 3 pounds 12 ounces. This weight reflects the full-grain leather construction, GORE-TEX membrane, Vibram sole, and supportive midsole components. The boots are heavier than lightweight mesh hikers but lighter than expedition-grade mountaineering boots, striking a balance between support and agility for backcountry trekking.
